Distribution: From Mexico to Panama.
Habitat: Epiphytic or terrestrial in wet and rainy forests, at elevations of 950 to 1500 meters.
Etymology: Ponthieva in honor of Henry de Ponthieu, an English merchant who sent collections of West Indian plants to the English botanist Joseph Banks; brenesii in honor of Alberto M. Brenes, who collected it for the first time.
